Why did I choose to read this novel? Because there is a show that came out based on this novel and I wasn’t able to find the time to watch it. That doesn’t mean I’m still not going to try to watch the show, but in the meantime I wanted to read the novel.
In the future, silver spaceships arrive on Earth. They belong to the Overlords, an alien race that is far superior to humans both in intelligence and in technological advancements. And they seek to dominate Earth. However, through their control, Earth is introduced to a time of peace and harmony, with no more wars, poverty, or disease. Human beings are now enjoying a higher quality of life and are happier. But with this newfound ease and comfort comes a stagnation on creativity – and the suspicion that the Overlords may have ulterior motives to their benevolence.
Even though this novel was originally published in 1953, its theme was so pertinent to today’s society. Most of the novel chronicled the ways in which the Overlords impact the world through the perspectives of different individuals. Although the story progression was slow, the details were so interesting that I couldn’t put the novel down! The meaning of the title only became clear closer to the end but it was fun trying to figure it all out. This was a great work of science fiction and I enjoyed it immensely. The ending was definitely on the sad side but I couldn’t see the story going any other way. Anyone who loves science fiction needs to read this book because it is definitely worth it!
